BHAPA ILISH or STEAMED HILSA is a classic signature dish in Bengali cuisine. ILISH or HILSHA fish is the king of all fishes. There are several famous dishes using HILSHA fish. BHAPA ILISH or STEAMED HILSA is one of the famous dish among the other dishes. Bhapa is a Bengali word. It means steamed in English. In this recipe we cook the Hilsa fish with mustard paste, poppy seed paste ,green chilli paste and some raw mustard oil to give it a fine taste. The raw mustard oil just enhance the flavour of the fish. You don't need many ingredients to make this recipe. It is really an easy recipe to make at home. This is really a flavourful recipe. Traditionally stainless steel tiffin box is used for this recipe. Though these days we make BHAPA ILISH in any large wok on gas top or pressure cooker or even in microwaves too. When you are serving Hilsa fish you do not need too many items in menu. Since Ilish is the star of the day. You make this recipe in any occasion. you can serve this lip-smacking BHAPA ILISH or STAMED HILSA recipe with steamed rice.

(1) Hilsa Fish 3 Pcs, (2) 2 teaspoon Mustard Paste, (3) 2 teaspoon Poppy Seed, (4) 1 teaspoon Green Chilli Paste, (5) 3 teaspoon Mustard Oil, (6) 3 Green Chilli, (7) 1/2 teaspoon Turmeric Powder, (8) Salt To Taste.

Step By Step Making Process Of BHAPA ILISH:

(1) Firstly, take the fish, sprinkle some salt and turmeric and marinate the fish.

 (2) Then in a tiffin box add the mustard paste, poppy seed paste, green chilli paste, salt to taste, turmeric powder, little bit of water and make a mixture.

 (3) Now add the fish into the mixture and coat the fish with the mixture nicely.

(4) The pour the mustard oil and mix.

(5) Then place the green chillies over the fish. Cover the lid of the tiffin box.

(6) Now in a pan boil 2 cups of water and place the tiffin box into it and cover the pan. let it cook for 10-15 minutes.

(7) Now your BHAPA ILISH Or STEAMED HILSA is ready to serve.
